How much does a PTA earn?
PTAs – pharmaceutical technical assistants – are the technical backbone of the pharmacy: they advise customers on medicines and self-medication, check and dispense prescriptions under pharmacist supervision, prepare formulations and stock preparations, and safeguard documentation, hygiene and quality processes. Training is usually school-based at a vocational college (about two and a half years) with practical phases in the pharmacy. Gross pay depends on region, collective agreements, company size, responsibility and extra qualifications. As a guide, qualified PTAs in Germany in 2026 often earn about €2,800–€3,450 gross per month; during training and practical phases typical ranges are around €850–€1,150.

Day to day, PTAs combine pharmaceutical expertise with customer contact and lab work: they advise, check dispensings, prepare formulations and meet quality and documentation rules – closely coordinated with pharmacists, PKAs and the team.
- Advise customers on medicines, interactions and self-medication and prepare dispensings under supervision.
- Check prescriptions and orders, clarify queries and document dispensing in the pharmacy system.
- Prepare formulations and stock preparations, weigh, mix and check according to manufacturing instructions.
- Support stock, cold-chain and controlled-drug processes and keep expiry dates and recalls in view.
- Follow hygiene, quality and data-protection rules and keep compounding and check documentation.
- Coordinate with pharmacists, PKAs and the team; instruct trainees and interns when needed.
